Velika Planina Mountain Biking

Just around the corner from Ljubljana, a trip to a genuine Slovenian plateau awaits. Renowned for its authentic architecture and beautiful views of the Ljubljana Basin and Kamnik–Savinja Alps, Velika Planina is a perfect MTB destination. This high-alpine pasture tour will be most enjoyed by slightly more skilled cyclists, since some parts of the trail are a bit more technically demanding. But the adrenaline rides and accompanying panorama are definitely worth the effort!

The tour starts at the Volovjek Pass, from where a beautiful macadam ascent takes us to the incredibly scenic plateau of Velika Planina. Memorizing views of the majestic mountainous word greet us as we ride through the pastures, dotted with grazing cattle and sheep, past traditional alpine huts where you can even get the opportunity to meet “old-school” shepherds and get to know their cheese-making tradition. Alternating macadam trails and some slightly more rugged pastoral paths will lead us straight to MTB heaven: riding down super soft grassy terrain that feels like cycling on puffy clouds.

Terrain: gravel and dirt

A tour goes on some slightly more technical terrain and will be most enjoyed by confident cyclists. Because of electric mountain bikes, it is not fitness-demanding.
