Incredible views of the imposing Julian Alps north faces and the surrounding alpine nature never disappoint. Even better – this cycling route is considered among the most scenic in Slovenia.
Recommended for everyone looking for a relaxing ride with great views and just the right amount of physical challenges, this mostly flat and undemanding tour is suitable for beginners and families, but can always be adapted according to participants’ abilities.
We’ll take a shuttle from Ljubljana and arrive at Mojstrana, which is the entry point to Slovenia’s alpine world. There we’ll straddle our bikes and begin our journey. It will take us through thick forests and lush greenery along one of the most scenic cycling routes in Slovenia. Wide open plains and stunning views of the towering Alps will be our constant companions all the way to Gozd Martuljek.
We’ll ride along the banks of the Sava River until we reach the famous sports hub of Kranjska Gora. From there it’s a gradual ascent across highland meadows and down through the settlement of Podkoren to Zelenci, the spring of Sava Dolinka River. Zelenci literally translates to “greeners”, and the place surely is green. This emerald beauty is best viewed from the lookout tower.
The tour then continues past the renowned Vitranc ski slopes and back to Kranjska Gora. The adventure simply wouldn’t be complete without visiting the pretty Jasna Lake with its snow-white shores and picture-perfect location. With our bodies feeling that pleasant cycling burn and our heads filled with inspiring impressions, it’s slowly back towards our starting point at Mojstrana.
Terrain: tarmac and gravel
The tour is mostly flat and is suitable for beginners, families, and children.
