Slovenia is an incredible destination for an active getaway, packed with natural and manmade wonders. This one-of-a-kind adventure is a combination of both. It involves kayaking, but with an amazing twist!
The picturesque region of northern Slovenia called Koroška (Carinthia) is a mountainous land of astonishing natural splendour. But its beauty isn’t limited to the stunning countryside you can see. Koroška’s subterranean world is just as fascinating. Besides being home to a legendary king that sleeps under a mountain, the place is famous for its abundance of ore deposits and has a rich mining history. One such mine is located in Mežica. Ceasing its operations in 1994, the mine was gradually flooded, turning its excavation sites into magnificent underground lakes. And we’re taking you there not only to see this subterranean spectacle, but to paddle down its waterways.
Our adventure begins at the mine’s entrance, where you’ll board a genuine mining train which will take you down a 3.5 km tunnel deeper into the mine. Your journey then continues by descending 95 m to a flooded underground shaft. Once at the water’s edge, you’ll receive all the necessary protective equipment (neoprene boots, a life jacket and a mining helmet with a flashlight) and board a three-person kayak. Accompanied by a professional guide, you’ll set off to explore a labyrinth of submerged tunnels, excavation sites and wonderful underground lakes 700 m under the Earth’s surface. Following a narrow passage, you’ll paddle across a few minor rapids and arrive back at the starting point.
After your kayak ride, you’ll take a walk past abandoned underground working sites to the mining train station. You’ll learn about the history of the mine and enjoy an authentic miner’s lunch. Then you’ll hop on the train which will take you back to the mining museum and the light of day.
