About Winter in Slovenia

Slovenia is an all-year-round destination, so if you enjoy winter sports half as much as the average Slovene, you’ll definitely want to plan your next winter holiday in Slovenia.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, looking for a romantic getaway or an adrenaline-packed ride, taking the family on a relaxing vacation or an active adventure – Slovenia in winter is the perfect destination you’ve been looking for.

When magical forests, rolling hills, majestic mountains and picturesque towns get covered in a lovely white blanket of snow, the season of winter activities in Slovenia is officially open.

The unspoilt winter wonderland of the Alps and other magnificent regions of Slovenia offer a wide array of outdoor fun that you simply shouldn’t miss out on. A giant network of hiking trails allows you to explore Slovenia’s uniquely diverse countryside and absorb its breath-taking natural splendour up-close. The country’s numerous and well-connected ski resorts are cosy, uncrowded, and equipped with pistes of varying technical difficulty. You can hitch a ride up beautiful snow-covered hills and sledge down their lovely powdery slopes. Stunningly serene valleys invite you to join a cross-country skiing expedition along their beautiful snowy ridges, through forests and across fields. In winter, Slovenia’s gorgeous glacial lakes, including the world-famous Lake Bled, turn into an ice-skating paradise. But ice can also be tackled vertically. Adrenaline junkies can enjoy Slovenia’s superb ice climbing conditions by scaling fantastic frozen waterfalls.

For those searching for a more laid back winter escape, search no further. Slovenia is home to wonderfully luxurious and health-boosting thermal spas with all the necessary commodities. After an active day on the snow, nothing is quite as relaxing as soaking in natural thermal springs, sweating in a sauna, getting a massage, or sipping some hot mulled wine and snacking on traditional Carniola sausage at one of many cute market stands.

First off: the hike of approximately 1 hour to the cave can be quite intense. However, we train jiu jitsu daily which has quite some cardio, and for us it was very doable. The hike was fun and had a few very nice viewpoints. After the hike, our amazing guide Anže gave us a good training on how to use the caving/climbing gear to go down steep/vertical slopes and back up. After getting ready, which took about 45 mins, we went into the cave. The cave itself is very large, and had some really nice features of which Anže was very knowledgeable and was able to explain a lot of details. After walking through the cave for a while (15-30 mins?) we arrived at the best part: an abyss of 40m straight down. This was an amazing experience, which was thrilling yet felt very safe. Even my wife, who has fear of heights, enjoyed the experience. She was scared/frozen for a bit, but Anže calmed her down, after which she was able to go all the way to the bottom and enjoyed it a lot! After the descent into the abyss, we climbed back up via another path, and experienced some more amazing parts of the cave. About 3 hours into the trip (including hike and preparation) we exited the cave and hiked back down to our starting point. This took another 30 mins I think. All in all, around 4 hours total for our trip. The experience was really unique, felt safe, but still got the adrenaline pumping!! Both of us agree: 10/10 would do again!

We took the 4-hour "City Bike Tour Ljubljana" with our guide, Andrej. Andrej was fabulous: filled with informative, historical, and humorous details. The ride allowed us to see many parts of Ljubljana in a short time, and Andrej tied it all together. The ride was not too difficult (we are seniors). The lunch stop was perfect (Slovenian charcuterie, plus a pour of local wine): enough to eat, water to drink, and a convenient WC. We recommend this tour (and Andrej) without reservation. We could not hope for a better experience.

This was a truly amazing experience! We really enjoyed our beautiful Seven Lakes Valley hike with an overnight stay at a mountain hut. The alpine scenery of mountains throughout the hike was simply stunning especially the crystal clear emerald lakes, which are absolutely breathtaking! The cosy mountain hut was a lifesaver after a long day’s hike, dinner was hearty and delicious, atmosphere was lively and the beds were warm and comfortable - overall a great experience! What made it all the more enjoyable was being in the safe hands of our brilliant guide, Klemen who was not only very experienced, professional and knowledgeable, but he was also extremely helpful and accommodating. He went out of his way to take care of our needs during the journey. From the start, he was very responsive and proactive in helping us arrange our itinerary in the best way possible to maximise our time there. We also did a private rock climbing session with him after the hike and it was awesome! We definitely enjoyed our time in Slovenia with him and highly recommend going with this company and a private guide like him if you are looking for a customised trip.
